Hydrocolloid Application Spotlight: Health & Beauty
Hydrocolloids have been a key wound-care technology for many years. Today, hydrocolloid technology has evolved with formulations that integrate functional additives, such as ingredients for targeted skin benefits such as antimicrobials or infection control.
Beyond that, new transdermal applications have emerged. Active ingredients used in many other solution-based products can be added to the hydrocolloid adhesive patch to be infused into the skin over time. An advantage is that the hydrocolloid can be applied once. It stays on longer, with ingredients continuously acting on the skin, eliminating the need to apply a topical product multiple times.
These capabilities have expanded the use of hydrocolloids across a broader spectrum, including skincare, to improve appearance, especially on the face.
For example, hydrocolloid dressings can be used as a spot treatment applied directly to an acne blemish. The hydrocolloid creates a protective seal over the skin, while absorbing excess fluid such as oil and pus, flattening spots faster and soothing inflammation/skin redness.
They also help the skin heal in a sealed, moist environment, supporting the natural healing process and helping prevent scarring. An advantage of hydrocolloids is that they act as a second skin, protecting the blemish and preventing touching the face (which can introduce bacteria and other external contaminants) or picking at the spot (which can increase inflammation and slow healing). Another benefit is that the blemish stays protected when makeup is applied over the hydrocolloid. These patches work for both day and night, as they are thin, flexible, and waterproof.
